Perched high up on a plateau, Rodez is an ancient city in the heart of Aveyron. This popular tourist destination is a classified ‘Town of Art and History’ and ‘Grande Site de Midi Pyrenees’ – an accolade given to areas of particular historical importance, in this case its Occitan roots. Book a flight for your trip to Rodez and spend an afternoon exploring the Notre Dame Cathedral. Built with pink sandstone it is reminiscent of a fortified castle, yet has a delicately carved clock tower. Rodez is also home to an Episcopal palace and numerous, charming timber-framed houses dating back to Medieval times. Its artistic heritage can be seen at the Musée Puech, built in honour of the famous, French sculptor. There’s also the Musée Fenaille with its unique collection of Paleolithic anthropomorphic menhirs and the Musée Pierre Soulages, which exhibits an extensive collection of paintings, engravings and lithographs by this home-grown artist. Outside of Rodez, in the rest of Aveyron, you’ll find stunning landscapes, home to herds of Aubrac cows, the famous Gorges du Tarn, the Levezou Mountains as well as the picturesque towns of Conques, Villefranche-de-Rouergue, Najac and Millau, with its vertiginous 2,460m viaduct. Sound’s good doesn’t it? Hurry up and reserve a hotel room in Rodez or the Aveyron region.
