Described by François 1st as the ‘town with a hundred clock towers’, Dijon is proud of its rich cultural heritage. Numerous half-timbered houses and mansions line the streets of the charming old quarter. Book a flight for your trip to Dijon and explore the Duc de Bourgogne Palace, a stunning example of Dijon’s exceptional architecture, equalled by the Musée de Beaux Arts and its extensive collection of French works. Once home to the French Parliament, this part of Dijon boasts buildings that housed magistrates, French Academicians and other dignitaries. The town also has its fair share of religious edifices – the Sainte Bénigne Cathedral with it enamelled, polychrome tiling and the Gothic/Renaissance Saint Michel Church complete with growling gargoyles and ‘jacquemart’ – a sculpted figure that strikes the hour. Reserve a hotel room in Dijon, close to these two magnificent landmarks. Dijon is also famous for its vineyards…take the time to sample the vintages produced in Corton, de Montrachet, Clos Vougeot, Nuits Saint Georges. During your time in Dijon, make sure you visit the Beaune Hospices, so typical of Burgundy’s colourful, Gothic style and a focal point it in this famous wine (and mustard!) producing area.
